Music Aptitude Training
At Soulwood, we offer specialist training for students applying to secondary schools within the West Hertfordshire Music Aptitude Consortium.
Our programme runs throughout the year and is designed to support students through every stage of the selection process. We provide comprehensive preparation for the multiple-choice listening test as well as tailored coaching for the practical audition for those who progress to the second round.
Lessons focus on developing key listening skills including Pitch, Melody, Rhythm, and Texture. Each student receives access to high-quality learning resources and regular progress reviews, ensuring they build the confidence and ability needed to succeed in their test
Our training Includes
Identifying Rhythm Patterns
Recognise and clap back rhythmic sequences, building inner timing and musical awareness.
Texture Identification
Listen closely to identify how many notes are played together-
is it 2, 3, or 4 notes being played at the same time?
Pitch Recognition
Train your ear to identify when notes move higher or lower, developing strong listening precision.
Melody Changes
Learn to spot subtle differences when short musical phrases shift, repeat, or stay the same.
One-to-One Performance Coaching
For students who progress to the second stage, we provide personalised 1:1 instrumental or vocal training to prepare a polished 2–3 minute performance piece, ensuring confidence and readiness for the practical audition.
